While a student member of the Wharton Admissions Committee, I got to meet hundreds of very accomplished and talented people.
However, I have also seen my fair share of strange things done by candidates applying to business school.
Here is a sample of things you do not want to do when applying.
Include revealing photos in your application
One application included a picture of the candidate wearing a three-piece suit surrounded by six women dressed in “swim gear." He was trying to show us that he was charming along with being successful.
Prepare a PowerPoint presentation for your interview
During one interview, the candidate wanted to show me a PowerPoint slide on why he should be admitted. I told him that no props were allowed and he was told this in advance. He was angry enough to ask for another interview with someone who would appreciate his great PowerPoint skills. This did not work either. Don’t expect special treatment during the interview. It’s unfair to everyone else.
Talk about the bar fights you've had
One person wrote an essay detailing the bar fights and scuffles he had been in over the past five years and how it made him tougher in the business world.
