How Dr. Oz Stumbled Into An Opportunity Of A Lifetime

Before becoming a household name, Dr. Mehmet Oz kept busy with building a career as a heart surgeon in New York.

In 1996, he gave Yankee Manager Joe Torre's brother, Frank, a heart transplant.

The team at the time was competing in the World Series and the attention on anything Yankee-related was more than usual, and Dr. Oz found himself surrounded by cameras and reporters.

"I began to realize that this [television] was a wonderful medium to get the word out," said Dr. Oz. "So the guy that I am wheeling down the corridor that I mentioned earlier [Frank Torre], if I could get to him just a month or two, or a year earlier, I could change his destiny."

And with the help of his wife, who is a producer, he developed a series on health for the Discovery Channel and met Oprah.

Watch the excerpt below where Dr. Oz tells the story of how his career began.
