To get a ready-made cupcake from a bakery, you had to go into the store while it was open, pay for the pastry, and walk out. If you wanted one in the middle of the night, you'd be hard pressed to find a place open.
Until now.
Sprinkles Cupcakes, widely regarded as the first cupcake-only bakery, has a remedy for that problem.
It has come up with the cupcake ATM. Located in Beverly Hills, all you have to do is walk up, stick your card in (like a bank ATM) and make a purchase.
The 24-hour machine doesn't just allow you to buy its regular variety of cupcakes—you can get dog cupcakes (for folks that stop by while walking their canine pals), cake mixes and Sprinkles-branded merchandise, according to the Examiner.
As silly as it sounds, it's actually quite a publicity-grabber. Sure, Sprinkles may not make a ton of money from a single automated cupcake dispenser, and it may not ever be the preferred way for folks to buy cupcakes, but right now it's serving its purpose by drawing attention to the Sprinkles brand.
Non-traditional marketing is something that Sprinkles has been particularly good at, having gotten a ton of celebrity endorsements (leveraging its status as the first cupcake store) and with things like the Sprinklesmobile—a pimped out Mercedes Sprinter van that it sells cupcakes out of.
