Pepper Jack cheese is on an absolute tear, and fast food restaurants can't get enough of it on their menus. In fact, its growth is unprecedented, reports Bruce Horovitz at USA Today.
Pepper Jack as a menu offering on fast food sandwiches has gone up over 37% over the past four years, and 56% on fast food burgers, according to Datassential.
It has also appeared in nearly 50 new consumer products in two years, according to Datamonitor.
And now, brands don't want to be left behind—nay, they can't afford to be left behind.
Marketing gurus say that simply offering the cheese on restaurant menus can give a chain a competitive edge. "It's one of the fastest-growing cheeses we've ever seen," says Steve Evans, marketing vice president of Blimpie.
Why the infatuation with the spicy take on regular Monterey Jack?
Evans tells USA Today that it's the millennials who are causing the rush to Pepper Jack, claiming that they're "more adventurous" with their sandwich cheeses.
