INSTANT MBA: No Amount Of Money Can Create A Sense Of Purpose

Julie Moreland

Today's advice comes from PeopleClues' president Julie Moreland's blog post at FastCompany:

"To bring out the best in your people, you need to create a fulfilling workplace environment and a sense of purpose for your employees."

Moreland uses Wikipedia as a prime example of a company that successfully tapped into the passion of their workforce to accomplish a task that money couldn't buy. The entire online encyclopedia was created by unpaid volunteers who had a desire to be a part of something great.

To create a similar sense of pride in your own workers, inform them from the beginning of your vision and ask for their input. Some employees will identify with the purpose while others will not. The bottom line is that money isn't everything, it's the sense of purpose that will encourage others to help you achieve your company's vision.

"Start by practicing what you preach and by taking steps to acknowledge, encourage, and reward employees who are dedicating themselves to the company vision.
